Chapter 2

For a moment, it felt as though cold water had been poured over my head. His purple gaze carefully scanned our pale faces, one by one, and then it stopped at Lethias's wide-open eyes. "First of all, I asked them to take all the necessary measures, so we'll have to wait and see, but I think you should prepare yourself mentally, just in case." What on earth is he saying with such a serious tone? Hey, male lead, what are you talking about? Prepare ourselves mentally! Our Estelle just has pneumonia! Yet, in some ways, it might have been an inevitable outcome. Estelle has always been frail. Besides, given our confined life in that cramped and poorly ventilated space, along with her prolonged illness in such a poor environment and a nutritionally deficient diet, this situation was likely to happen. Perhaps unconsciously, I might have sensed it already. I might have been trying hard to deny it, frequently reassuring myself that it was just a symptom of a cold. Still, even so...

The chapel with the bell tower was situated far away from the main house, and since it was April Fool's Day, the guests at the banquet wouldn't have suspected what had actually transpired while they were occupied with their festivities. I learned the details later from Lethias and Benya, and the circumstances leading up to this were roughly as follows: As far as I recall, it was known to the world that the Serpente siblings were studying abroad at the Royal Academy in Fzeia. They were well-known children of the Serpente family within the Empire. Additionally, the mystery surrounding the reason why some nobles had left to study in the same place we had fled to during the Great Plague two years ago was now unraveled. The cause of this curiosity was Assad di Romena de Avalonia, the Emperor's eldest son and the Crown Prince of the E...

Chapter 2

Our last days in the bell tower went on like that. Perhaps it was because we were expecting to leave this place soon, or maybe we were trying to forget our dreadful anxieties, but we seemed to have regained some of the joy we had lost before. We laughed and chattered incessantly while preparing for our escape. Finally, the long-awaited April Fool's Day arrived. * * * Since yesterday evening, Estelle had started experiencing a dry cough again, which greatly concerned me. When I checked on her in the morning, it was evident that she had a slight fever. I did my best to keep her warm and comfortable, placing wet towels around her to aid her rest. We were planning to leave this place the next day, but uncertainties loomed over us, making me nervous about many things. As Estelle dozed off, wrapped in a wool blanket, the three of us shared the last remaining cold sausages and hard bread from yesterday's meal. Then, the operation began in earnest. In the dimly lit downstairs, where da...

It'll be like playing a prank on them for April Fool's Day." "No, the date we choose might not align with the actual calendar." "I've told you multiple times already! The event will be open for two days, so it won't matter much if we miss one day or so." "That's true, but what if we end up missing not just one day, but a few days?" "You're really... You're joking with me, aren’t you?! I marked it on the first day of the new year, what could we possibly miss?! Are we going to make a plan or not?" "Oh, is that so? It's because I'm trying to be cautious, you jerk! Show some respect for your Hyung’s meticulousness!" "If you dare to show your 'meticulousness' once more, I'll blow up and perish even before we get a chance to attempt our escape." God, ...

Chapter 3

"My sister is sick. Shouldn't we bring something more appropriate than scraps or leftover food, Mr. Butler?" Harris remained silent, then turned his back to leave. Lethias followed behind him. "She said my sister is sick!" With a sudden burst of anger, Lethias kicked the tray on the floor, sending it tumbling over. As Harris stumbled into the hallway, another attendant standing nearby intervened and forcefully threw Lethias inside. Benya left my side and rushed to his brother's aid. However, facing much stronger adults, both Harris and the attendant, Benya soon found himself thrown down next to his brother. The altercation didn't end there. Being attacked again by the boys, Harris stepped inside and grabbed another tray from the floor, seemingly fueled by a distorted judgment. He ruthlessly struck Lethias, who was just getting up, over and over again with the tray! Witnessing his older brother being assaulted in suc...

Chapter 2

I desperately dreamed of escaping, but there seemed to be no way out. Hiding in a cart and attempting an escape proved futile as I was already exposed.                Even trying to climb down the tower through that small window would lead to certain death. Let's say some miracle happens and we manage to get out of this tower. Where could we possibly go? Estelle was so weak that she couldn't even run, and above all, leaving her in the tower would put her in the hands of our enemies. Could there be at least one trustworthy person left in this ducal residence? "Nevertheless, Hyung is still somewhat himself, but Estelle is no longer the same. These days, she seems like a ghost wandering around... Sometimes, I wake up in fear, dreading that they might be dead. So, I can't sleep." Hesitantly, I reached out and touched Benya's eyes. His expression was complex, a whirlpool of emotio...
